What hospital staff are saying...

Loma Linda University Children's Hospital-

“From the time we were fortunate to first meet you, we knew how much passion and interest you had in helping children. Your comfort toys have been a blessing to the children in our care, as it helps them know that things will turn out just right.

In working with the Chief of Residency at Loma Linda University, there has been no doubt that these comfort toys bring about more than just a smile. When children are assured that the outcome to their illness or surgery will be a good one, or when they feel that someone is traveling this journey with them, then their confidence skyrockets and their fears diminish. These psychological changes impact the healing times of children, and can improve their health outcomes.

The products that OwieBowWowie and Friends provides to ill and injured children are a significant part of their healing process, while in hospitals and beyond. Thank you for sharing your vision and toys with our kids.”

The Power of Play

Alfred Adler once said, "Play is a child's work, and this is not a trivial pursuit." We believe he's right.

When children play they are working things out, testing theories, role playing options, dealing with fears, and imagining experiences.

Without the benefit of a qualified therapist, many hospitalized children feel scared, confused, and out of control. Our line of specially designed toys and books fills an important gap in helping children understand and cope with their illness, surgery, hospitalization, treatments, and proceedures. Because play is such an integral part of children's lives, it seems only natural that it can be used as a method for dealing with children's problems. Through play, children deal with conflicts and issues that scare them or make them feel sad or hurt.

Children lack the cognitive maturity to benefit from talking through their problems. Nor do adult controlled activities give children the feeling of empowerment they can achieve with the voluntary activity of play.

"Symbolic play provides safe opportunites for reenactment, rehersal, the practice needed to strengthen the child and prepare him for dealing directly with traumatizing events." Beverly James

When a child is helped in this way, a clear message is sent: receiving help is okay. Therapy allows children to internalize this nuturing message and learn. In J. Vaicunas, & R. Robbin (Eds.) Child development: Its nature and course (pp.371-373). New York: McGraw-Hill, Inc.

Childrens Hospital Los Angeles-

“With more than 11,000 children admitted a year to the hospital, Childrens Hospital Los Angeles will gratefully accept the donated Just Mom, Inc. comfort toys. In the 29 outpatient clinics and laboratories, there are more than 287,000 visits a year. The Just Mom, Inc. comfort toys will provide the comfort and security to some of the most seriously ill and injured children in Los Angeles.

Just Mom, Inc. recently coordinated a donation event in the Center for Cancer and Blood Diseases at the Childrens Hospital Los Angeles. Gina’s gracious donations provided joy to nearly two hundred patients and their siblings. Gina personally handed the colorfully wrapped toys to the children as they awaited their medical treatment. The special event brought comfort to the patients as they underwent diagnostic work-up, chemotherapy and treatment. The wide smiles and beaming eyes of the children reflected their gratitude for the Just Mom, Inc. comfort toy gifts. Just Mom, Inc’s comfort toys made their hospital visit special and memorable.

The patients at Childrens Hospital Los Angeles will treasure these thoughtful gifts from Just Mom, Inc. Gina clearly shows that she wants to make a difference in the lives of patients and families at Childrens Hospital Los Angeles. We truly appreciate her efforts and look forward to continue working with Just Mom, Inc., and OwieBowWowie and Friends Foundation."
